The View from across the canal
Oils on 40 x 50 cm canvas
2025

The charm of the canals is in the community around it. From the other side of the water, the distance gives you a perspective to appreciate as though you are painting a portrait of The Hague, in this instance it is not the famous landmark side, but the lovely residential side that may often be overlooked.

In this body of work, I used an evolution of my favourite art process. Starting with a bright vivid ground I lay the ground work for composition and explore many ideas, then I go back to my studies and decide on which direction the painting will continue.

As the decision forms, I mix my oils in intentionally muted colours for contrast and tension. With intentional strokes, my goal is that the forms are defined without any overwork to allow the viewer’s mind to fill in the gaps and enjoy the medium as well as the visual outcome.
